Secondary Magnetization of Some Palaeozoic Rocks from Tasmania
نویسنده
چکیده
A variety of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic Palaeozoic rocks from Tasmania have similar directions of NRM-steeply upward. Although the mean direction is not significantly difIerent at the 95% confidence level from the present field, its inclination is slightly steeper. Moreover, the palaeomagnetic pole calculated from these directions is closer to Tertiary poles from Australia than to the present pole. On this data it is statistically more probable that the NRMs are of Tertiary rather than recent age. Their characteristics are the same as viscous PTRMs, and they are likely to have been acquired during a period of slightly elevated rock temperatures. This warming-up may have been associated with Tertiary basaltic activity in Tasmania, or with slightly later regional heating over wide areas of eastern Australia, which has previously been suggest-ed on petrological grounds.

Reconnaissance Geological Observations on Precambrian and Palaeozoic Rocks of the New and Salisbury Rivers, Southern Tasmania
Phyllite and quartzite, probably Precambrian, trend meridionally and dip steeply in the New River Gorge above the junction with the Salisbury River in southern Tasmania. Further upstream an association of silty dolomite and conglomerate is less deformed and may be younger. Siliceous conglomerate boulders occur in the New River below the gorge. Late Ordovician carbonates of the Gordon Group are ...
متن کاملOn a Remnant of a Stripped Peneplain of Palaeozoic Age at Mount Sedgwick in VVestern Tasmania
It is well e~tablished (Nye and Blake, 1938, pp. 22, 42) that a peneplain existed over much of Tasmania at the beginning of the Permo-Carboniferous sedimentation. Beds of Permo-Carboniferous and Trias-Jura sediments were laid down on this surface, and, apart from tilting, retain their original horizontal relation8. At, or near, the close of the Trias--.Jura sedimentation, the intrusion of a dol...
متن کاملLower Palaeozoic Unconformities in South-western Tasmania
Recent geological work in south-west Tasmania on a regional scale has allowed the compilation of existing information regarding Lower Palaeozoic unconformities, namely the description of new localities and in some cases the amplification and extension of previously described exposures. Carey and Banks (1954, p. 245) provide a review of information to 1954 and their classification of unconformit...
متن کاملTacharanite from Tasmania, Australia
THE mineral tacharanite has been recently re-examined by Cliff et al. (1975). They worked on material from the original locality, Portree, in Scotland (Sweet, I961) and from a few new European localities described between I97I and I974. None of the post-Sweet authors, however, refer to the second discovery of the mineral from Tasmania where it was identified by this writer in I961 and recorded ...
